Reflexology is a holistic healing method which involves pressure and massage of the reflex points of the feet and hands. These reflexes that are found on the soles of the feet and palms of the hands act as small ‘mirrors’ reflecting your whole body.
Reflexology rests on the ancient Chinese belief in qi (pronounced “chee”), or “vital energy.” According to this belief, qi flows through each person, circulating between the organs and the body, permeating every living cell and tissue. If this energy becomes blocked, the part of the body relating to the blockage is affected. When a person feels stressed, their body blocks qi.
Energy blocks in the human body are reflected on the hands and feet in one or more zones located there. By using specific pressure techniques, they can be detected through the experience of pain, or through the presence of ‘gritty areas’, us therapists often refer to this as crystalline deposits. These occur in the part of the foot and hand that relates to the part of the body that is imbalanced.
The pressure and massage techniques that I use during a reflexology treatment are designed to dissipate energy blocks, and break down the crystalline structure. Through stimulating the circulatory and lymphatic systems, we are encouraging the release of toxins, helping the body to heal its self.
Reflexology is a helpful complementary treatment and is extremely effective therapy for stress, anxiety, tension and tiredness, it can also be used as a preventive measure against ill health.
